Year-end Top 10: Chinese Web Celebrities

1. Wang Zifei - Chinese Obama Girl Wang Zifei became a sensation on the web and was dubbed as the Chinese Obama girl because she was photographed posing and taking her conspicuous red coat off behind President Obama during a town hall meeting. This MBA student from Shanghai received more than 1.3 million hits on her blog and countless comments and criticisms around the web.

Wang Zifei cracked under pressure and admitted on her blog that she removed her coat on purpose and paid off a photographer to take the photos. Moreover, she said paid an online viral marketing agency 100,000 Yuan (about $14,641) to spread those photos online.

2. Ren Yueli - hand-to-mouth amateur singer with soothing voice

Ren Yueli is an ordinary girl making her living in an underpass in Beijing, China by playing the guitar and singing. However, after a video of her singing was released online, she became a sensation with millions of hits. Perhaps girl street singers in China is rare or because people are moved by her soothing voice and unyielding fortitude, Ren Yueli is now recognized for her singing and composing talents and has her own website at www.xidangirl.com

3. Zeng Yike - one of top 10 Happy Girls of 2009

Happy Girls 2009, a Chinese version of the American Idol, is immensely popular among the Chinese youth. This year, the show got more popular with the addition of Zeng Yike. Zeng's controversial singing voice stirred up widespread debate among the viewers and judges (one judge left the show in protest). Zeng's love or hate voice has been characterized has tremulous and sheepish. Fans say her voice is a unique characteristic and style while naysayers say she has no basic talent at all and she shouldn't be on the show.

Zeng was on the show and qualified for the top 10.

4. Kang Xiaohan - candied hawthorn beauty

Kang Xiaohan has been named the most beautiful tanghulu (sugarcoated haws) seller in China by the Chinese netizens. Kang, 19, earns her livelihood by selling these sugarcoated haws on a stick at the south gate of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Her genuine smile and positive attitude won respect from her peers and fellow students.

5. Gong Mi - a Cecilia Cheung lookalike

Gong Mi is another controversial contestant from Happy Girls 2009, but this time her singing is not the focus of attention. Gong Mi became a hit in various online forums for her resemblance to Hong Kong superstar Cecilia Cheung. Gong was frequently in the news, first due to her good look, then a rumor that she took plastic surgery to achieve her stunning beauty. The latest rumor was over claims her manager was actually Cheung's first agent.

Mercifully, Gong withdrew from the Happy Girl contest due to illness.

6. Kong Yansong - long-legged beauty

Angelina Jolie is famous for her lips and Jennifer Lopez is known for her butt. A Beijing Sport University student, Kong Yansong, became famous overnight for her legs. She was selected by netizens as the winner of a beautiful legs competition. Her photos have been widely circulated on the Internet with most people showing their appreciation for her stunning figure. 7. Meng Kunyu - most handsome traffic cop in Beijing

Meng Kunyu is a traffic cop in Beijing and after a group of admiring students made a video of him on the job and uploaded it on to the web, Meng Kungyu became "the most handsome traffic police officer in Beijing." Meng is known for his accurate hand signals and patience while giving directions.

8. Jia Junpeng - virtual character in cyberspace

Everyone knows his name, but has no idea of his existence. Jia Junpeng is an Internet meme and popular catchphrase within China.

A post with the title, in Chinese, "Jia Junpeng, your mother is yelling you to go home for your meal" (贾君鹏你妈妈喊你回家吃饭) appeared on the Chinese portal Baidu for the game World of Warcraft and amazingly, after only six hours, it attracted more than 400,000 viewers and 17,000 replies.

9. Gu Jiawen - bus beauty

So are we getting the drift? Normal people with normal jobs, add a little special ingredient and equals internet sensation. Gu Jiawen is a ticket seller on a bus, but because she's looks a lot better than the average ticket seller, she becomes famous. Gu Jiawen, 20, sells tickets aboard the No. 934 in Shanghai and lived in relative obscurity until a web posting highlighting her beauty was seen by millions.

10.Lu Aiyan - impersonation talent

Lu Aiyan is the young comical genius who impressed cyberspace with his numerous facial expressions and timely lip-synching to the music of the late Michael Jackson.

Lu Aiyan and his aptly named 'Super Imitation Show' received more than 1.3 million hits in just three days, which made him the youngest web celebrity of 2009.
