For the most part, the Chinese education system is exam-oriented. Chinese students spend most of their student careers (from elementary school to high school) preparing for the college entrance exam - the most important standard for determining whether they go to college and which one they go to.
Teachers in elementary, middle and high schools in China assign tons of homework to students, the idea being that students will better remember what they have learned through repeated practice.
Moreover, in order to assess how well the students are doing, each semester includes a mid-term and a final exam, as well as some sporadic quizzes in between.
