The word “小生” in “奶油小生”has two meanings. In Chinese style Opera, a character classified as a “小生” is young male, and usually has no beard. This term can also be used by a young male scholar to refer himself. Young male scholars are usually considered to be refined, polite, and in most cases thin or scrawny from doing little physical labor. As a result, the word “小生” became associated with a handsome, but gentle young man. The expression “奶油小生” is used to refer to a young man who is neat, pretty , with fair-skin and somewhat effeminate.
