I've been studying Chinese for 5 years and I'm convinced of several things. 1. Tones are vastly overrated. 2. Vocabulary is much more important. 3. Non-native speakers, unless they start very early in life, are almost beyond the stage of both hearing and/or speaking tones. 4. Context, proper word order, and vocabulary trump tones.
