I guess the reason you learn it is the same reason we learn it in the UK. It is useful for bringing your English on to a new level. It is like excercise, to get better at running you don't run at a comfortable pace, instead you run until you can't bear it anymore.
Do not be discouraged if you cannot understand/enjoy Shakespear. Many native English speakers struggle with it.
