what is the difference between qu(4) and dao(4)?

It seems to me that both mean "to go".

e.g.

we go to her house for dinner.

wo3 men qu4 ta1 jia1 chi1 fan4.

OR

wo3 men dao4 ta1 jia1 qu4 chi1 fan. --can qu4 be omitted?

Thanks.

Thank you! It is very helpful.

Another question is what if I say "I (will) go to your house." - "wo3 dao4 ni3 jia4 qu4." or "wo3 dao4 ni3 jia1." What is the difference then? Which one is correct? and Why? Thanks.

"wo3 men qu4 ta1 jia1 chi1 fan4. " 我们去他家吃饭 is more appropriate. ususlly we say "wo men dao na li qu gan shen me" is OK. but “qu” can be omitted, 'cause "gan shen me" already used a verb. chi is a verb.

You have forgotten to write:

"wo men dao na li qu gan shen me"

in Chinese (using characters - to be precise)!

in my opion,these two sentences "wo3 men qu4 ta1 jia1 chi1 fan4" "wo3 men dao4 ta1 jia1 qu4 chi1 fan" have the same meaning. so the word"qu" can omit "dao".

Actually,“去”and“到”are two different words, the former one equals to "to go" while the latter one bisically means "to arrive at (place/time)".
As for the second sentence you listed above, "dao" just indicates a direction to go, the main verb is still "qu". Although people can understand you even if you omit that "qu" , you should know that the two words differ in meanings and functions.
