Which Mandarin is being taught here?

I'm working on Beijing Mandarin and hope to keep doing this until I feel safe enough to do "southern" Mandarin.

Beijing Mandarin is the most standard one.

The courses here are all taught with standard Mandarin (putonghua); so I guess it's the Beijing Mandarin.

It is only one Mandarin. Other Chinese languages are dialects. Mandarin is standard Chinese. It may happen that people from different area in China speak Mandarin affected by their local accents, which is different from dialect. You can just say they can not speak very good Mandarin. The purpose of Mandarin is making people from diffrent area can communicate with each other easily. You have to understand even Chinese people from diffrent place can barely understand each other in their own dialects. So teachers in China main land are requested to teach in Mandarin. That is why Chinese young poeple can speak much better Mandarin than older Chinese generations.

hi,bjbouwer
All the "upstairs" friends are right. The Chinese taught here is just Mandarin, which is the only standard accent. If you can speak good Mandarin, you can definitely talk to southerners.
