I have two Taiwanese speaking partners and a Beijingese tutor. I've noticed that they sometimes differ in their advice regarding sentence structure and pronunciation. At first this wasn't a problem (I've studied Spanish and know taht pronunciation and vocabulary can vary widely from country to country).
However, as I progress, I'm seeing that Taiwanese sentence structure seems to be more involved than Mainland ways of speaking. Does anyone have any advice? Will this be a problem? Thanks!

Hi, stillwaters21
Just as you said, it is very normal that the Chinese Beijingese speak and Taiwanese speak vary somewhat in pronunciation and vocabulary, but the set of grammar or those core sentence structures are always consistent.
You mentioned that "Taiwanese sentence structure seems to be more involved", would you please give us some specific examples so that we can better analyze for you.
Thank you for your support to our website.

For oral Chinese, Taiwanese is modern but informal, while Beijingese is comparatively traditional but formal.
As for written Chinese, grammars of the twain are almost the same.
The third thing is that characters in Taiwanese have the unique charms in Chinese but more difficult. Characters in Beijingese are just on the contrary.
Anyway, which to learn depends on where you are. They are all Chinese and they have so much in common.

I recommend you intensely to learn Mandarin Chinese for it's official. There are sorts of dialects, which have some local special sentence structures,in China including the taiwan's.not to warry and that you just focus on Madarin Chinese is enough.
